"Der Hölle Rache"
"Die Zauberflöte"
--Mozart, 1791

Der Hölle Rache kocht in meinem Herzen,
Tod und Verzweiflung flammet um mich her!
fühlt nicht durch dich Sarastro Todesschmerzen,
so bist du meine Tochter nimmermehr.

Verstoßen sei auf ewig,
verlassen sei auf ewig,
zertrümmert sei'n auf ewig
alle Bande der Natur
wenn nicht durch dich Sarastro wird erblassen!
Hört, Rachegötter, hört der Mutter Schwur!

["The Queen of the Night Aria"]
["The Magic Flute"]

Hell's vengeance boils in my heart;
Death and despair blaze around me!
If Sarastro does not feel the pain of death because of you,
Then you will be my daughter nevermore.

Disowned be forever,
Forsaken be forever,
Shattered be forever
All the bonds of nature
If Sarastro does not turn pale [in death] because of you!
Hear, gods of vengeance, hear the mother's oath!

Perhaps the mother should go kill Sarastro herself if she wants it done that badly.

I am the first to admit that I do not know the storyline of the Magic Flute.

But that would be boring, and no fun at all. Er, I mean, that would make for bad theatre. [vbeg] This clip will give you a bit of backstory, I hope you enjoy.

Thank you :D

I have heard this before and knew it was Mozart but never where it came from.

While the Queen of Night was singing in Pamina's face, a thought came into my head that I hoped she had not been eating onions lol

Ah, that's one of the arias I can definitely not sing.

I can squeeze by as Pamina, but The Queen of the Night is out of my reach (it's written for a coloratura soprano).

Oh, I think it is wonderful that you can sing Pamina. Very few have the coloratura range (I think that is what it's called?) for the Queen of the Night. Though I do wonder what the role might have been like if Mozart's sister-in-law been a "lesser" singer.

Well, I can reach an E flat, but it won't sound pretty, and I my voice is not "agile" enough for the "coloratura" required. Coloratura refers to all the thrills, leaps and other ornamental things you can do with your voice. There are coloratura mezzo-sopranos like Cecilia Bartolli. She is amazing.

I like to sing but my voice is full of snaps and snarls, very awful indeed. I must get my love of opera and classical music from my dad's father; I am told he was quite keen on it.

No one is born with the ability to sing Opera. I mean, no one. There are people who are born with an innate musicality, a very nice timbre, but to sing Opera, well, that's all about technique and hard work and being willing to spend a lot of time learning how to sight read, how to keep time and exploring your body.

Have you ever tried voice lessons?? Everyone can sing well, we just don't know how to. :)

No, my voice is pretty well gone now -- too much hard living, etc. I am told I was a good singer in school but I was turned down for choir when I was 12 because my voice 'changed'. Which is weird, I didn't think womens voices could change that much. But apparently mine did, and I just quit (the others who did make the cut thought it was just hysterically funny.)

A great aria to listen to if you feel mad with someone!

Yes, it is that. Or if you need to write a very dramatic, emotional guilt-trip scene... *ahem* ::looks around nervously::
