Advice, Like Youth, Probably Just Wasted On The Young
{Reprinted without permission from the Chicago Tribune. Originally published: Sunday, June 1, 1997. Initially attributed as written by Kurt Vonnegut for the 1997 MIT graduation ceremony.}
Inside every adult lurks a graduation speaker dying to get out, some world-weary pundit eager to pontificate on life to young people who'd rather be Rollerblading. Most of us, alas, will never be invited to sow our words of wisdom among an audience of caps and gowns, but there's no reason we can't entertain ourselves by composing a Guide to Life for Graduates.
I encourage anyone over 26 to try this and thank you for indulging my attempt.
Ladies and gentlemen of the class of '97:
Wear sunscreen. If I could offer you only one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists, whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience. I will dispense this advice now.

I've been trying to find this quote for a *long* time and hopefully someone can help me find it.
I'm not sure who said this but I'm thinking it was an actor who worked with JD on one of his films. The gist of it was this: JD made everyone else try that much harder, he challenged them as actors. When he died, Brando and a lot of his contemporaries weren't *quite* as good as they had been, they were still good but they had an element of laziness in their work because they knew there was no one to challenge them anymore.
And I see Heath in the same way: He was a challenger (for lack of a better term.) He made everyone around him elevate their game, kept them on their toes and wouldn't let them be lazy. Just that grin, and a wink and a nod that said "ok, let's rock and roll, come on now" but deep down you knew he meant it, he wasn't kidding around but it wasn't mean-spirited, it was that he seemed to know just what his colleagues were capable of and he wanted to see them get there.
Ok, I'm probably being stupid again -- my apolgies.

Gay Rights
Oct. 4th, 2006 07:09 am"Why is it that, as a culture, we are more comfortable seeing two men holding guns than holding hands?" - Ernest Gaines
We would like to know who really believes in gay rights on livejournal. There is no bribe of a miracle or anything like that. If you truly believe in gay rights, then repost this and title the post as "Gay Rights". If you don't believe in gay rights, then just ignore this. Thanks.

I Love This Quote
Mar. 22nd, 2006 11:17 am"On Wednesday, March 1st, 2006, in Annapolis at a hearing on the proposed Constitutional Amendment to prohibit gay marriage, Jamie Raskin, professor of law at AU, was requested to testify.
At the end of his testimony, Republican Senator Nancy Jacobs said: 'Mr. Raskin, my Bible says marriage is only between a man and a woman. What do you have to say about that?'
Professor Raskin replied: 'Senator, when you took your oath of office, you placed your hand on the Bible and swore to uphold the Constitution. You did not place your hand on the Constitution and swear to uphold the Bible.'
The room erupted into applause."
