Special thank you to one of my hockey sibs, who alerted me to this little gem.

Oh, sports! I think I need to make a pilgrimage to this NYC sports bar, because -- well, just because. If anyone doesn't think there is much hidden subtext in sports, check this out -- though if you don't know hockey, it won't be nearly as funny. For those of you who do though... XD

"Even in the unisex bathroom, a photograph depicts the retired hockey players Brendan Shanahan and Steve Yzerman costumed as Batman and Robin on Halloween."

I have included the full article under the link cut.

A Spot to Raise Cheers and Glasses
By ELISA MALA

IT may not be Vancouver, but if you’re looking for a congenial New York spot to share the excitement of the Olympics, Warren 77, a sleek sports bar in TriBeCa, is a good bet. For the next two weeks, the bar’s six TV screens will be steadfastly tuned to the 2010 Winter Games.

Warren 77 opened last May, and the owners — Matthew Abramcyk, the nightlife veteran (he opened Smith & Mills, Employees Only and the Beatrice Inn, now closed); Chris Miller, a former art dealer; and Sean Avery, left wing for the Rangers who once interned at Vogue — emphasize comfort in everything from the menu (mac and cheese, sliders, filet mignon) to the couches and cozy booths.

On the rare night when Mr. Avery is not hanging out at the bar, chatting with fans, or adjusting the stereo to play Radiohead and Neil Young, customers are still surrounded by athletic prowess. Lining the brick walls are iconic shots of legends like Muhammad Ali, Hulk Hogan and a roller hockey team from the late 1800s, many photographed by the likes of George Kalinsky and Diane Arbus (“There is something about the athlete and American sports — it’s kind of heroic,” Mr. Abramcyk said.) Even in the unisex bathroom, a photograph depicts the retired hockey players Brendan Shanahan and Steve Yzerman costumed as Batman and Robin on Halloween.

Like the owners, the patrons on a recent Sunday night were stylish but laid back. Several feet from the arcade area — where customers can test their skills at Pac-Man, 1943 or Donkey Kong — a group of seven 20-something men were transfixed on a football game. (New York teams are a priority, but “if you make a reservation in advance, we can broadcast any game that’s on,” Mr. Abramcyk said.) Three women from the neighborhood sat in a nearby booth, willfully ignoring the action. “I’m at a sports bar with the game on, and my husband is at home watching the kids,” said Jane Banjak about the girls’ night out.

Accompanied by two friends, Sotheby Chung, 29, an architectural designer, was there for the sixth time. Mr. Chung said he discovered the place a few months ago when he lived in TriBeCa, and though he has since moved, he still treks back there.

There’s only one ground rule: “Do not cheer for your team!” joked a patron, Melinda Miller, 25. Even the most ardent fans are rarely rowdy, which keeps decibel levels reasonable.

Cheering for the beer is another matter entirely. “They have Molson Canadian, which makes us laugh,” said Chandra Stempien, a Canadian who sipped one alongside her Canadian friend, Neil Simons.

An apropos choice for toasting a victory at the Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver.

Oh, please tell me it was the 60s-era Batman and Robin. That would just answer so many questions, for realz.
