10 Things Meme (Day 1)

Since it's the first of the month, I thought I would start this meme (ganked from darkdreamer):

DAY 1: 10 things about you

1. I don't wear any makeup at. all. None. Ever.
2. I prefer to keep my hair short.
3. I have a very small house (ok, it's a shack).
4. I collect all sorts of recipes.
5. I do not drink 'diet' drinks.
6. I miss eating my godmother's kolaches and runzas.
7. I never wanted to go on to college/uni.
8. I knew how to break a horse to drive (I still do,but it's been *ages*.)
9. I have over 200 books on my "to read shelf" (ok, make that "to read *bookcase*").
10. I learned how to bake *real* bread -- not bread machine bread, not frozen bread -- from my grandma and my mom.

I don't bake bread very often, mostly because my stove is too old and touchy to bake very well. I should get a new one but I can't find a style I like.

Kolaches are Czech pastries that are "open-faced" and usually filled with fruit. Sometimes they have a crumb topping as well but not always.

Runzas are a German-Russian 'pastry sandwich' (filled with meat, cabbage, onions and assorted seasonings "to taste", sometimes with cheese) that are baked.

Sadly, I never learned to make either of these. There just wasn't enough time. :(

Let me play too? I have been meme deprived for ages!

1. The first postcard I received in life was from a LJ friend.
2. I wanted to be a nun while I was 15.
3. I cannot eat anything without spices.
4. I have not watched more than one episode of any television show.
5. The smell of jasmine gives me a splitting headache.
6. I spent one entire day standing in the rain because the sunday-school teacher hated when I said she was foolish to believe God is male.
7. My parents were called up by school administration six times during my school career because the teachers felt I was slow to get things. They wanted me to be sent down an year.
8. I can go without food for 4 days, provided water is available.
9. I chew my nails when worried.
10. I still collect bird feathers.
