When I was playing with Lucky just now, I noticed that she has lost the upper right fang (canine?). As in totally, completely broken off at the gum line. *SIGH* I have no idea when this happened, it must have been in the last couple of weeks: you know, when I have been super-busy with legal stuff and rendering unto Caesar? It's still no excuse though, because she's been rubbing that side of her face against me for at least that long, and dummy me did not pick up on her distress signals. ::headdesk:: Stupid, foolish human. ::headdesk headdesk:: So now she has an appointment for next week, as it does not involve blood, broken bones nor did it just happen. *SIGH* Due to the economy, the vet has just cut down office hours (it started March 1st) and adopted the policy of keeping Fridays and weekends being on call for emergency care and the drop-off/pick-up of boarders (which, y'know, I can understand.) While I should arguably take her to another vet right away, this particular group/clinic is super-great; they're very good with cats -- they handle them easy and gentle, with lots of skritches and soft talk to soothe them. (If you have animals, you know how much this means.) So it's off to the vet again next week. :(

PS. Lucky has now disappeared somewhere inside the house. I am giving up on looking for her for now because she is freaked enough as it is.

The exact same thing happened to my 15 year old cat. I have checked a few times and don't see any infection or redness, and she doesn't seem to have a problem eating.

It was such a trauma for her to go to the vet, that I decided to only take her in for an emergency.

My other two cats need to go in for shots & one needs dental care, but because I'm unemployed, we're waiting until I start working again.

*sigh* It's so ironic that I have all of this time to get things done like vet visits, but no money to do anything. I am going to the library though because it's free.

Hope Lucky is OK

Hmmm, maybe it's a more common w/older cats? Lucky is 14. She seems fine and I don't really want to take her in but I should. I can't really afford it either but I feel so damn *guilty*. :(

The two I took in yesterday were needing their shots, actually way overdue and I don't need the city deciding to get weird. at least I have current rabies tags now.

Yay for libraries! They are great and free is always good.

Oh yes, she is very smart. I am convinced that she recognized the number from the way I punched it in, lol.

yeah if there is anything left Lucky could get an infection.

God they can get expensive even if they are adorable.

I've been really fortunate with her having good health. Other than the usual shots, the only other 'expense' was when she was spayed at about age 2 (I rescued her directly.)

I suppose she's been eating ok, otherwise you'd have noticed it bevore. Older cats are just like old people, they loose their teeth, they become disorientated (never believed this one, but my 17 year old tomcat really forgot that it was FIRST go to his toilet and THEN pee, during his last month he always did it the wrong way *smiles sentimentally*)

Let the vet have a look at it, I don't think it will be something dangerous. Keep us updated?

She always sits beside me on the desk and rubs on me when I work on the computer so this time I just didn't pay very close attention. I don't think it will be too bad, but I feel horribly guilty for not noticing sooner.

Spooky's older brother, Indy, started losing teeth by age 5. He always seemed to have dental issues and I started taking him in 2x per year to have his teeth cleaned. By the time he died at age 12 he had lost both bottom fangs, several molars, and most of his teeny tiny teeth in the front.

Fortunately, Spooky still has all his teeth at age 10 and they do seem to be in pretty good shape.

I agree that Lucky needs to have that stump removed. Can you imagine if the nerve is exposed? OUCH! Keep us updated!

Oh yeah, I know what it is to have an open cavity like that. She seems to be handling it pretty good now, but still... :::cringes::: She's been in really good shape and until now dental work has been relegated to 'luxury' status. :/ I'm glad that to hear Spooky has good teeth though. How is his new diet working?

Well, I think you saw my last post that had the 2 comparison pictures. He's lost so much weight it's getting hard to pinch up enough of a fat roll to give him his shots! :D

But I keep procrastinating on the raw meat diet. It's so much easier just to open a can than making a balanced raw meal. Still, even the canned food has some rice as filler which means it has carbs. I could buy the really good canned food but that would be so much more expensive that I might as well finally invest in all the equipment and supplements to make the raw meals. I'm just so lazy!
