Writing Meme
Feb. 12th, 2009 07:40 pmGanked from one of my hockey sibs. Have fun!
1) When you have a new idea for a story, do you begin to write it immediately or do you let it sit and mellow a while before you start on it?
I try and jot down a few quick notes. However, I have noticed that most of ideas come during an IM. ;)
2) Word processed or handwritten?
Both. I carry a small notepad so I can jot down things I think of when not at the computer. Then again, I usually remember stuff during IM... :)
3) Do you write fic in a fandom because you're wanting to write fic in that fandom? Or do you start with a general theme or idea you want to explore, and then select the characters and fandom that best suits to explore the concept?
I have to have some sort of interest in the fandom or I can't write it, period. Though I honestly do write OF from time to time.
4) Do you talk about the story as it unfolds, or do you keep it tightly held to your chest until it's finished?
It depends. Sometimes I talk a lot about it; other times I don't because I can't (for whatever reason.)
5) Do you write out large chunks of the story and then go back to edit it, or do you write small sections and polish them one by one?
I write from B to R to H to L and then back to C or Y. I am a very non-linear thinker/writer which drives some people mad. I'd like to say though, that I can't write what I don't "see" or "feel." I constantly work on bits as I go along; sometimes I leave them alone, other times I can't stop tinkering.
6) Do you have to have a title before you can begin to write? Or do you chose your title afterwards?
Usually afterward. I give everything some kind of working title, though it's not necessarily *the* title.
7) How much research, if any, are you likely to indulge in before beginning a story?
It depends on what I am writing, and what fandom.
8) What is your writing strength, and what is your weakness? How does knowing your greatest strength and weakness affect how you plan your story/ the direction the story takes?
Strength: Getting ideas. :)
Weakness: Finishing a fic. :(
9) Do you write to music? If so, how much does the music you are listening to affect the mood of your story?
If I can find the right music, I do. Music can have a big influence on my writing. Otherwise, I prefer near-total quiet.
10) Do you try to incorporate quotes, snippets of song lyrics, poems, etc. at the beginning of your story? If so, why? How do you choose them?
I will if it's right but it's very random. I try to avoid it where possible; then again I reworked Herb Brooks "This is your time" speech for a fic.
11) If you are about to write a story about a character or pairing that you have never done before, and are not particularly familiar with other stories written in the same vein, would you avoid stories written about this pairing until your story was complete, or read everything you could find to see how other handled the idea?
It totally depends on the character/pairing. If they don't speak to me, I can't write them. Period. Reading or not reading other stories doesn't make a difference.
12) Do you have a muse? Is it an evil muse? Or are you museless?
I have many muses -- all are very temperamental.
13) Who is the first person you are likely to show your story to? Is there someone who's opinion means more to you than anyone else?
Usually one of my sibs, or a beta.
14) If there is a character that you particularly dislike, do you try to write a story about that character? If so, how does your dislike affect characterization? Do your feelings about the character change after you have written about them?
No. If I dislike them that much, I usually have them in a secondary role or a cameo.
15) What are you doing answering this not-survey when you should be writing fic!? Shoo!
Me? Not writing? But this *is* writing! ;)

3) Do you write fic in a fandom because you're wanting to write fic in that fandom? Or do you start with a general theme or idea you want to explore, and then select the characters and fandom that suits best to explore the concept?
if not on a particular topic which I feel inside me, I think it would be unable to write anything

I do not know, I'm not that complicated
5) Do you write out large chunks of the story and then go back to edit it, or do you write small sections and polish them one by one?
write and publish, no more, then on the fly and even publish it, things change.
6) Do you have to have a title before you can begin to write? Or do you chose your title afterwards?
always on, always, always.
7) How much research, if any, are you likely to Indulge in before beginning a story?
nothing or very little.
Imagination and common sense
