Back For Now
Dec. 31st, 2006 09:18 pmYeah, so the electricity went off sometime during the night and didn't come back on until about 6:15pm or so. I'd been hearing that we wouldn't have electricity for another two days so this was a very nice surprise indeed. It was weird, not having lights or anything. Mostly, it's the quiet that is so strange. For some reason the water remained on, and the gas never shut off--or I should say, the gas appliances I have (furnace, hot water heater) didn't have to be relit, which is nice as well.) As expected, it was the ice/wind on wires and poles that did the real damage. It's going to be a little warmer from now on though so hopefully I can get by until next weekend. And I discovered a Very Important Thing--while I can do w/o tv, cooking (face it, pbj is good enough for a meal if need be) and other electrical-dependent conveniences of modern life, I **suffer** w/o any 'puter or Internet. Big surprise, eh?
In other news, I have learned some things that I need to "fix" before next time I am faced w/a power outage.
1) Batteries! The ones I have are older than I thought because they should have lasted more than since last fall (when I bought them). Mostly C & D batteries (unfortunately, the newer radios take *lots* of 'em, damn) and I need to look for a new laptop battery.
2) *New* flashlight! The new one I have should have worked ok, but it didn't. Weird.
3) A car charger for my new cell phone. This is another priority, since I need to have the thing charged. I was lucky this time, it had a full charge--but when I went out to warm up the car, I realised that I didn't have a charger that worked for this phone.
4) Non-sugary snacks!
No other news. Not sure if I will stay up until midnight or night. Stay tuned, I guess.
