Heh. I still prefer maps over GPS and libraries over ebook readers. I only got rid of my walkman a few years ago when it broke. (It lasted about fifteen years, with fairly heavy usage.)
To me, the more "high tech" things are, the easier they can (and often will!) break down.
I still listen to a lot of cassettes and cd's. I only have a little mp3 player though; I've never wanted an iPod. I suppose I could afford it but things like that generally get stolen or wrecked somehow. (Hint: washing machines and dryers are not kind to electronic devices. Yikes.)
I don't even have an mp3 player; I back up all of my online-purchased music onto CDs. When my Walkman broke, Dad bought me the CD version for Christmas.
Well, a lot of these things are still possible. Nothing's stopping you from turning off your satnav and going by map, or visiting a library instead of downloading a new ebook.
(I do get these nostalgic memes. But I also think we shouldn't bash modern times, or the kids who know nothing else, too much.)
To me, "high tech" = "breakable, takes forever to repair." Ugh!
My car doesn't have satnav, thank goodness. And I just have a little ol'd dumb phone, no way to take pictures. [g]
I did get a e-reader as a gift but I had a hard time setting it up -- and then I couldn't follow through because it wanted a credit card/banking info and I just flat refused to go any farther. (I try to avoid using plastic online as much as possible. Also, the set-up part was such a pain that it took a lot of the "fun" out of it -- the plastic issue was just the last straw.)
I miss the old days. Then, I still believed "good times" were ahead. I know better now, which is depressing.
Heh, I'm one of the people who'd swear they don't need a smartyphone, too. Then I got one and now I actually use some of its smarty functions. (Taking pictures and checking e-mail, because it's quicker than turning on the computer...)
I'm not convinced by e-readers. There was a brief time when I considered getting one --- after my first son was born and needed to be nursed at least two hours each night. I tried to stay awake using audiobooks, but it's easy falling asleep when you're being read to. Even easier to fall asleep without anything to keep you occupied, though! So at that time, a reading device with its own light would have been useful. But then I realised that I didn't actually have to stay awake because the baby, quite honestly, found his own way around. And who cared whether I put him back in his cot or whether he slept in my bed? (yeah, I know there's a whole holy war going on about co-sleeping, but never mind!) So I didn't get an e-reader. Instead, I got more sleep! XD
But some technology I do enjoy. Wouldn't want to live without the internet, for all nostalgia!
For me, cell phones are nothing but a leash -- and a leech. (I actually hate phones.) Also, we get very poor reception here. It's glitchy at best. Once you get a few miles out, no problem. *sigh* Figures.
I wish the internet/computers had come along a decade or so sooner. It would have made all the difference in the world to me then. But at least I have it now, and believe me, it is not just a lifesaver but a sanity-saver as well. :)
