Day 5 – Favorite love story in a movie
Romeo and Juliet (1968)

romeo and juliet 1968

Admit it, you knew Shakespeare would be showing up sooner or later, right? ;)

This is one of the films that had a big impact on my life. Not only did they use an actor and actress "of the proper age" for Romeo and Juliet (seriously, anyone older than their early to mid-20's should not be playing such young roles, it's just wrong) but I fell in love with the medieval setting and I have had a deep love/fascination with all things medieval ever since.

I know there have been more recent remakes, this is *the* definitive one for me. Although "Shakespeare In Love" comes close -- but only because Judi Dench gives us a very clear lesson on how to totally pwn everyone.

Oh I so totally agree! This is one of my favorite movies ever. If I made a top 10 list, it would be there. Such a marvelous rendition of the story with sumptuous setting and beautiful actors of the right age. Such amazing fight scenes. I became forever enamored of Michael York who played the young hotheaded Tybalt because of this movie. Oh and the actor who played Mercutio just incredible. I think this movie really captured the essence of Shakespeare's tragedy and made me understand it all in a way that reading the play in high school did not. One of the things that has struck me about it is how my perspective changed as I've seen it at different stages in my life. When I first saw it I was a teenager and totally identified with Romeo and Juliet. I went to see it 3 times, once specifically with my best friend so we could cry -- unfortunately my snarky brothers were along on that one and made so many funny comments we ended up laughing. Still, I remember seeing it later when I was in college and focusing on the political situation of the two warring families and how Shakespeare was commenting on the folly of that. Then I saw it again when I was a young mother and was struck by how much all the adults in the situation had failed the young lovers -- especially the ones closest to them, the nurse and Friar Lawrence. Just shows the genius of Shakespeare in his characterizations.

This reminds me, I need to get this movie in DVD since the version I have is VHS and I don't even have a VHS player any more.

Oh yes, there is something about seeing "word come to life" that is just totally fascinating.

I remember being so thrilled when "Romeo and Juliet" came out on VHS -- it was one of the first I bought on dvd.

Oh gosh - I remember seeing that movie on a double date with my boyfriend and another couple at a drive-in movie theater.

That is really cool -- I only saw it in a regular theatre though.
