While wasting time doing research, I found the following maps. Two of them are Tolkien-based, showing what LoTR & TH would look like if super-imposed on a map of North American And Europe, respectively.

Although I put them under the cut, they're mega-sized, so you'd probably better use the link instead.

These are quite kewl. I'm fascinated by Bilbo and Frodo's journeys across the US. It does put the journey into perspective for me. And I also love that I'm so close to Forodwaith and that Frodo came so close to my home that I might have met with him for a meal. Fun!

It's really cool to see the relations to well-known distances with this. But I wonder what they based their super-imposing on. I can't say for the U.S., but for Europe, it wouldn't work climate-wise; they would have needed to turn the maps to make it work better. ;o) My husband is a fictional geography and climate geek, and we often talk about what in Middle-earth would compare to local climates...

Interesting. Poor Thranduil's kingdom is underwater in the Europe version lol

Nice maps! Though I have to say I think the scale is out by around 20-25%. Hobbiton and Rivendell were supposed to be at the latitude of Oxford, not Belfast! (And Minas Tirith at the latitude of Florence, and Pelargir at the latitude of Troy).

So it's more like this:
