December Meme
Dec. 4th, 2014 06:09 pmToday's topic: Charities
This time of year, I always seem to get bunches of mail asking for charitable donations. And yes, I do give to some but for the most part I try to keep it as local as possible.
If you are wondering about just how 'good' certain charities are, I found this link that might be of some help:
http:// www. charitynavigator .org/
This year I plan to make donations to the local animal shelters and the SA food pantry.
I'm also trying to find if there is a specific charity that donates money directly into children's school lunch money accounts. I've been reading too many times how various schools across the country are serving kids when they go through the lunch line, only to literally pull their lunches from them and dump the food when the register shows that there isn't enough money in their account to pay for the meal. (The kids are then given milk, a piece of fruit and "something else".)
As you probably know, I didn't like school very much but even so, the idea of any child being humiliated in such a manner makes me very angry. There has to be a better way to handle things. (And let's not even get started on the sheer amount of waste that goes on. That's a separate issue for another day.)
Ok, getting off my soapbox now. Back again tomorrow.

Date: 2014-12-05 08:37 am (UTC)I know of a charity that provides food to school children in rural areas in Africa - it seems so sad that parts of the USA need something similar.
