I just found a way to keep the cats from digging up the stuff I just planted and the bulbs that are almost ready to bloom. Soft dirt attracts cats almost as much as fish or catnip, lol.

Take four electric fence posts and then take the amount of hail screen needed (it might be called hardware cloth in some places) by pushing/pulling the screen over the posts until it is level over the soft soil. Or you could just drive the posts through the screen from the top but I think it works better the other way.

Better yet, you can reuse it and move it wherever it is needed and it should be good for several years.

I have a picture of the kind of screen I am talking about under the cut. If you go to a farm or garden supply store, you should be able to find it easily. It's not the same as poultry screen/netting though.

hail screen
According to the label, it is called hardware cloth. However, I have only ever known it as 'hail screen' and I will probably continue to call it so.

Good idea.

I had a vegetable garden when I was a kid. We hammered stakes into the ground, over the seedlings and put a thick, lace net curtains over it. The sunlight got through but the cats and birds avoided it. The cats didn't like falling through, so once they tried it they didn't do it again.

Thanks for the tip! I might try that later on if I have a large enough garden...
