Midwest tornado outbreak unusually strong for November

Midwest tornadoes hit Illinois hardest Sunday. The event, which spawned at least two EF4 tornadoes, was 'unprecedented' for November, an Illinois official said.

The numbers are historic: 194 tornado warnings have been issued in Illinois in the month of November since 1986; 101 of those warnings were issued Sunday.

I heard that IL got at least 65 tornadoes from this storm, several F4 and six deaths. It's quite bizarre to have them so late in the year, our own tornado warnings only go until November.

I remember when I was first going to IL to work for the summer and I was stationed near Cairo and the discussions on every rolling cloud day was about the tornadoes that had struck the area over the years. Being from Colorado, where we had tornadoes but they weren't as common, it made me just a bit nervous :-)

I hope everyone you know got through this in good shape. So far all of my friends in Illinois and Indiana seem to have been missed this time (thank goodness!).

I read somewhere (and if I find the link again I'll repost it here) that since there have been 198 (?) tornadoes (including warnings and watches, I suppose) in November in IL. That means Sunday's total of 101 equals 53% of them... O_O
