Pick a character I've written and I will give and explain the top five ideas/concepts/etc I keep in mind while writing that character that I believe are essential to accurately depicting them.

Okay - Loki (:

Ehehehehe. :D

1. Loki is related by blood to Odin and Thor; he's either Odin's son or maybe nephew since Odin is half-Jotunn and Thor is three-quarters Jotunn. (Yes, I frequently borrow from myth as much as movie.)

2. Loki *hates* talking about "The Svaðilfari Incident" though he is very proud of his son Sleipnir. (In fact, asking him about Svaðilfari is akin to asking Fëanor about his stepmother. Of course, if you like being at ground zero...)

3. Loki loves to eat but he is a very picky eater. He loathes huge public feasts where his every move (and by extension, everything he eats or drinks) is watched and commented on.

4. Loki is an intensely private person. He probably has Asperger's syndrome or something very like it. He's developed enough coping mechanisms to get by (and being a royal prince helps quite a bit to excuse certain eccentricities of his) but once those core coping mechanisms are gone -- look out.

5. Loki hates being lied to (which is why Odin's A+ parenting skills totally destroy every bit of self Loki thought he had) and he never forgets a slight or an insult. He is a firm believer in the adage "don't get mad, get even -- very even." (Of course, this has a tendency to lead to Pyrrhic victories.)

Glorfindel!

Or Gil-galad. OR BOTH.

Glorfindel

1. Glorfindel is a gifted horseman; his father started him on riding 'lessons' before he could walk.

2. Glorfindel is related to the House of Finwë and not just through the marriage to Indis either (technically, he could have been considered as a candidate for high king of the Noldor... but he never was and he never pushed the issue.) He is actually more Noldor than Vanyar but he inherited the Vanyar blond gene.

3. Glorfindel is very assertive and confident. He doesn't back down very often or very easily (see above.) He will accept a sensible reasoned argument but just being told 'no' w/o any reason is practically a guarantee to make him do the opposite.

4. Glorfindel is very sensitive about his name. Only very young children are allowed to call him 'Glorfy'. His closest friends and family may call him 'Fin' in private though.

5. Glorfindel is an only child and always wanted a sibling.

Gil-galad

1. Gil is very sensitive about his parentage. He grew up believing his father was Fingon, only to hear rumors after Fingon's death that Orodreth was his birth father and not Fingon. Gil intended to ask Maedhros if he would tell him the truth about his parentage but he never had the chance.

2. Gil was engaged before he was sent to live with Cirdan but the girl died. After her death, he swore that he would never marry, hoping to end the curse of the high kings of the Noldor.

3. Gil and Elrond are good friends and very close but they were never lovers.

4. Gil and Glorfindel have a great deal in common and secretly wish they were brothers. Interestingly, many people who don't know better think that they actually *are* brothers.

5. Gil kept a personal journal from the time he was able to write until his death. Afterwards, Glorfindel and Elrond gathered all of his journals, locked them in a large chest and sent the chest on Cirdan's next ship to Valinor. They are stored in the royal treasury and Finarfin has the only key.
