Stevie Y. Retires
Jul. 3rd, 2006 12:43 pmI can't say that I'm surprised but I sure wanted to see him play one last time. *sigh* Stevie's been game to the bone, a genuine Thoroughbred. He put up some amazing numbers that were often overshadowed by his contemporaries, namely Gretzky and Lemieux. Some professional pundits would argue that he wasn't big enough to be effective but both he and Gretz are about the same size (6 ft., 185 lbs.), so there goes that theory (though Mario did fit their ideal mold, being 6'4, 220 lbs.) It's been hard watching him these last years, for the simple reason that you could just see him playing his heart out and sometimes, it was as if he was the only player who showed up. I read somewhere that the Detroit players were ranked as follows: (1) Gordie Howe and (1A) Stevie Y. [I honestly don't remember the rest of the players *or* rankings, sorry.] Stevie's a rarity in that he only played for one team his entire career (and a O-6 team at that.) It's hard to imagine him not getting ready for the season. :( [If he were a real Thoroughbred now... but he's already got his family.] Goodbye and good luck to the Captain.
