Found on one of my comms and am cross-posting the links here:

Bush signs law that will collect all newborn DNA for national database
http://www.infowars.com/?p=1896

S. 1858: Newborn Screening Saves Lives Act of 2007
http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=s110-1858

Does this scare you? It sure does me! I mean come on, we all know the track record here -- do you really think there is no mega-disaster potential?

EDIT: I hope the links work now. If not, please let me know.

Yeah, it's surprising what laws the government can manage to pass by diverting citizens attention elsewhere.

I know! Which is why I tend to ignore the headlines (not that they aren't important but still) and look for the stories that aren't on the front page. It's the stuff we don't know about that is what hurts us.

Okay, that idea totally f-ing bothers me. And I'm a geneticist, I know how to sequence DNA, so no-one can say I'm superstitiously afraid of the general idea. Oh, no, it's only having that deeply private info in our government's hands, our government's, and automatically for everyone, that's giving me the heebee jeebees.

Once upon a time, the social security number was absolutely, definitely, unequivocally, only for keeping track of our social security withholdings and benefits, and never, ever going to become a universal serial number for all citizens. Fears to the contrary were plumb unfounded. Ha!!

*shudders*

I know! Whenever I voice my concerns about government interference in our lives, I am informed that I am "just being paranoid." *sigh* Then I read something like this... =/

Ok, the links are now fixed. I *think*. If not, let me know. Gattaca, 1984 -- if only they *were* fiction...
