I just heard that dry pet foods, notably Science Diet and Hills are being recalled as well. This whole pet food thing is getting even scarier, 'cause I kept hearing only moist/wet foods were affected. But now? I just don't know. I've been lucky so far because I feed my furkids Purina (yeah, I know--it's not as good as some are but on the other hand, it hasn't been affected by the recalls yet) and I was just getting ready to get more for the cats. The dog only eats very little, considering how much people food she begs from me. Well, they all beg nibbles, to be honest. But still. I am sad to say that I am beginning to think that this whole mess is some weird-ass government conspiracy gone wrong--or maybe it went right? After all, animals are considered property, not people, and thus are expendable. So.... I just don't know.

I had a 45 minute talk with the lady at our pet food place, the one where we get our lizard's crickets. She explained to me that the reason so many brands are involved and the list is expanding... is because the contamination wasn't at the pet food manufacturing plant... it was a screw up at one of the major companies that supplies one of the raw materials for the pet food. It's in the wheat (chaff) that is used for filler in some foods. By the end of our talk and after reading the ingredients lists on the side of lots of brand's packaging I decided to buy dog food that uses rice-bran or oat-bran until this mess gets cleaned up.

Have a talk with your local pet-food place. They're likely better informed than the average person and certainly better than the grocery store clerks.

Ok, thanks. I'm probably ok, since I've been feeding this batch of food (I buy the 18 lb. bags) since December/January and none of them have shown any symptoms of illness yet. But I need to resupply soon--at least for the cats--and it's hard to know what to buy these days.

The pet food industry is shit, it's just now they're finally getting caught. In other countries they don't even buy pet food, they make their own. There are a lot of recipes online for homeade pet food, its a lot better for them and cheaper.

I need to find some good recipes, that's for sure. I mostly changed when I thought I would be doing a major move and my mom was in hospital, it was easier to leave them free-feed. Plus I figured that way during the move I would have their food under control so it would be one less thing to readjust to and once settled I could be able to switch back gradually to something more suitable. But now it's all different. Btw, if you know of a *good, reliable* recipe site, please let me know.
