I'm so glad I checked the website at TCM. They're showing a classic silent movie tonight and I am so definitely taping it! Yes! Hopefully I can snag a few more. So many of the old silents were destroyed over the years, partly due to their volatile nature (silver nitrate = major fire hazard), many more were scrapped during WWII for that same silver content to be "gathered" and used for the war effort, but most of all because they *were* silent films and as such, they were considered less important and not worth keeping. What a pity. Of course a few do turn up now and again but for the most part, they only exist in the old movie magazines. As you can tell, I am one of those film preservation nuts.

It's time for the show, yay. I know what other movie I'd like to see: "How I Won The War." I only ever saw it once, super-late one night *ages* ago. Probably one of those damned 1-3am showings on HBO or one of the other pay channels. I never could figure out why some things run so late and all sorts of junk gets dozens of day/early evening showings.

EDIT: I wish I could lip-read French. I'd love to know what the actors are saying. I suppose they're keeping close to their actual lines but still.
