Very true! My parents, both dyed-in-the-wool pedagogues, didn't want us to watch TV regularly (we're talking early 70s in Germany when there wasn't much on TV anyway), so the TV was in their bedroom and we didn't get to see much more than the "Sandman", a 10min program in the evening with a good-night story and a song. Watching TV elsewhere wasn't forbidden, so visiting friends who watched a lot was always a treat, but then I would miss playing with them so we didn't watch much anyway. Until today I don't like "watching TV" as in following what's on the programme, or sitcoms, or talk shows and such, but I love watching documentaries and movies, although I much prefer to watch them when I choose (as in, on DVD, by stream, or recorded), but not when the program dictates. And reading has always beating watching. But I also always was the odd one out for that, and still am.
The only thing I miss about tv is the local news & weather -- mostly weather updates. We had one channel that was especially good with local morning news & weather but when that channel was dropped by the cable company, I just got rid of cable.

I did enjoy watching tv as a kid but less so as I got older. And now, tv and movies are released on dvd/blu-ray/online almost as soon as the season is over, so why bother with regular tv?
I used to be so hung up on watching cooking or home ec shows....now I still watch some stuff, but via download or DVD. I can handle the programs, it's the commercials and news I can do without :)
After all, without the commercials and such, it's really a lot like a book, but with moving pictures. :)

Now almost anything I would have watched on tv is online a few hours later so I can't say I'm missing anything important.

I'd rather read/write than watch tv anyway. :)
