Gakked from my flist:

Pick any character from a fandom I'm interested in and I'll answer the following questions:

1. What is your opinion of this character? If you like, explain why you like him/her.
2. Is he/she important to the general plot?
3. Can you relate to this character at all? Does he/she grip you emotionally?
4. How much do you like the fandom that this character comes from?
5. Do you ship this character with any other character? Or, are you particularly intrigued by his/her relationship with any other character(s)? (romance-wise or platonic)
6. Is there anything about the character you would change?
7. If you were in the fandom with this character or knew this character in real life, how would you see yourself interacting with him/her? Would you get along well? Fall in love with him/her? Dislike? Have a friendly rivalry?
8. Does this character make the cut as one of your all time favorites (if you like) or least favorites?
9. Would you hype up this character (if you like) or warn about this character (if you dislike) to someone new to fandom?
10. Is this character popular with the fanbase?

Thranduil :)

1. j'adore! :) [Why? He's an elf. :)]
2. Definitely important.
3. Yes and yes.
4. I love it. It was one of my first fandoms, though I didn't really grasp the idea of 'fandom' back then.
5. I'll ship Thranduil with almost anyone except Legolas. As for his relationships with others, that would be everyone, especially those who were in the Last Alliance: Oropher, Galion, Gil-galad, Elrond, Glorfindel...
6. No. (Expand on certain aspects, yes but change? No.)
7. I'd really like him but I'd keep my distance. There'd be little or no interaction -- the gap between our worlds is too vast.
8. Definitely an all-time favorite! :)
9. Oh, I'd definitely hype Thranduil to anyone. That being said, I'd remind them that the book and movie-verses *are not* the same. (No offense to Mr. Pace, who did a wonderful job -- but I'm definitely giving PJ the stink-eye here.)
10. Oh Yes! :) (Or at least he is in my little corner of the fandom.)

Since it was just announced that the X-files are returning, how about Dana Scully?

From: [identity profile] samtyr.livejournal.com
1. I really like her but then I like seeing women having careers.
2. Definitely important.
3. Somewhat but honestly after S5, I'm pretty much emotionally cold to all of the characters. :(
4. I used to be really serious and pretty hard-core about it and I still count the friends I made back then as some of my oldest and closest. But after the first movie and S6 started, I just lost interest *and* liking. All of the talk about XF returning just leaves me feeling "meh", as much as I wish it could be different.
5. I never did ship her with anyone. I loved the UST between her and Mulder though -- until the higher-ups decided to change everything.
6. I wouldn't change anything from the first 5 seasons (except for Queequag; the little guy deserved better). But after S6 on... well, I've already said it haven't I?
7. I think we'd get along -- or at least as much as it is possible to get along with anyone who is with the Federales. :(
8. Definitely a favorite.
9. I really don't know how to answer this, given my past history with the show. I'd like to think the reboot is going to go back the 'original' first seasons but I'm very doubtful about that now.
10. I think Scully is very popular.

One last side note: One of the things SPN has gotten right -- and which XF failed spectacularly at -- is being accessible to the fans. If XF had put forth even a fraction of the effort SPN has with assorted cons and things -- well, then I'd probably feel a lot differently about the reboot.

It is so long since I was a serious X-files fan, back before I had proper internet access, so the following is written on the flimsiest possible background:

I wonder if the show and its fan interaction suffered from being balanced on the cusp of the internet age, and not knowing how to deal with the emerging way that fandom operated by means of the net? The increased visibility and intensity of fandoms and fans thanks to the new technological opportunities? I recently saw a clip of a recent interview with Gillian Anderson where she talked about their (one?) XF ComiCon experience and how astounded she was by the intensity of the fans there. She described this one fan who asked a question and was very emotional about it, and she seemed very creeped out and completely mystified. I remember wondering whether she'd been living under a rock, tbh. I thought the fan sounded like someone you'd find in any fandom, overly intense, sure, but not that far out in that particular setting. It was as if the last 15-20 years of fannish intensity and mainstream fannishness had completely passed her by. I was disappointed in that, however much I still admire her as an actress.

Whereas the SPN guys now, yes, they are at the other end of that scale. They know what modern fannishness is aboit and know how to deal with it.

I agree with you. Back when XF was at its height, I was just beginning to find my way online and discover fandom in general. So I suppose that XF just didn't understand modern fans that well. I think that XF sponsored a few con appearances but very few and I don't think there were any after the first movie promotions.

And yet, shows like Star Trek and Doctor Who seemed to "get it" and appeared able to adjust to their fans with more ease and certainly a lot more friendliness. (And the rabidness of *those* fans (ST & DW) probably makes many others pale in comparison.)

I'm glad that more tv shows & movies -- and the actors -- have learned to adjust and cope with the modern fan. Though I still think the actors tend to be a bit bewildered by it all at times.

1. I've always liked Aragorn. He seemed to be *so cool*, a king-in-exile... though in my younger days, I was probably more intrigued by his Ranger life.
2. Oh, he's definitely key to practically everything.
3. I can relate to him -- and he definitely has a grip on me.
4. As I said earlier, I love it. It was one of my first fandoms, though I didn't really grasp the idea of 'fandom' back then.
5. I've shipped Aragorn with a few people -- it all depends on my Muse -- but I don't think I've actually written much fic with him.
6. No. I might want to expand on certain things but not change.
7. Oh, I could definitely get along with Aragorn. Probably more of the good friends or neighbors though. And definitely no romantic interest, just a lot of liking and admiration.
8. Definitely an all-time favorite.
9. I'd hype Aragorn to anyone -- with the obvious caveat that the book and movie-verses are not identical or interchangeable.
10. Yes, I think that Aragorn is very popular. :)

Celegorm

From: [identity profile] samtyr.livejournal.com
1. Celegorm has always interested me because he is such an animal lover.
2. He's key to the plot in a lot of ways.
3. Again, I can relate to Celegorm in a lot of ways but mostly it's due to his love of animals.
4. As I have said before, I love it. (Though I didn't read the Silm first since it hadn't been published yet.)
5. I don't think I really ship him with anyone, not even Aredhel. I'm much more interested in how he gets along with his brothers -- mostly because I am an only child. Large families fascinate me.
6. No I wouldn't change him. Expand on his background, etc. but there's no reason to change.
7. I think we'd get along great as friends but I'd never be in love with him.
8. Celegorm is a definite favorite.
9. I probably would though it would help if I knew if they were animal lovers.
10. Yes, I'd say he's pretty popular.

1. Feanor is just amazing. He's like a great wild beast -- you can't help but admire him even if he does scare you to pieces. [g]
2. I think that in some ways, it can be argued that Feanor *is* the entire plot (and he knows it too. ;)
3. I don't think anyone can really *relate* to Feanor, unless it is one of his family. Feanor is one of those polarizing characters -- you can love him or can hate him but you will never forget him.
4. I love this fandom.
5. I don't really ship him with anyone other than his wife but I love exploring his relationships with his family (which can easily lead to slash. Heh.)
6. Feanor informs me that there is no need to improve upon perfection. (Thank you, Mr. Modesty -- now give me back my keyboard.)
7. I'd probably be too intimidated by him to be very coherent, so I'd be a servant or perhaps a merchant.
8. Feanor is definitely an all-time favorite.
9. I think I'd just ask them if they'd met him yet. I could tell by their reaction what they thought. :)
10. As I said earlier, you either love him or hate him but you never feel indifferent to him, so I'd say he's very popular.
