1. Flying Cloud -- David W. Shaw
I remain fascinated by this book, not just because she was a "tall ship" but because in 1851, on the Flying Cloud's maiden voyage, the navigator was the captain's wife -- Eleanor Creesy.

2. Sinbad and Me -- Kin Platt
The summer adventures of a boy and his bulldog -- complete with pirates, gambling and buried treasure. Sadly it's OOP now and it probably costs the earth if you are lucky enough find a copy.

3. Shadow Castle -- Marian Cockrell
I read this the same summer I read "The Hobbit/LotR" and the 'Narnia' books years -- no, not *that* many!, lol -- before the Silm was published. Blissful! It might not be as well known as the others but it's definitely worth reading.

As long as there is good light and enough room for me to stretch out (so the cats can settle comfortably on my lap, of course ;), that's where I'll be. Oh, and quiet. Quiet helps a lot. [g]

Probably the rapid increase of my "to-read" shelves. And I know people love e-books but really, I would probably just fill that as well and *still* not make a dent in what I want to read.

Probably when I realised that I could read whatever I wanted in high school (that is, unauthorized books in class ;) and the teachers weren't going to do anything about it. I mean seriously, no teacher was going to complain about my reading Shakespeare in class. (Or Steinbeck, Hemingway, Fitzgerald ... ehehehe.)

At university, it was when my lit teachers insisted on students reading writers who wrote in other languages. Tolstoy, Goethe, Dumas (père et fils), Hugo, Borges, Tagore... I have remained fascinated by non-English writers ever since.

In my last year, the new chair of the English department was horrified to learn that none of the graduating class could read the Greek and Roman classics in their original language -- we were relying on *translations*! Sacrilege! I don't know if they were able to demand all new lit students had to be able to read in either language or not -- they certainly thought we should be able to read in both!

Probably Stephen King, though I haven't read *all* of his books. I used to read every single one but after awhile, his books were just less... fun, I guess. They weren't really bad, just... Not Fun. ::shrugs:: His early works remain brilliant though.

Actually, I am all set to start a new one. Since I'm going on holiday, I want it to be a stand-alone or one that I won't mind horribly if I don't read every day. (I had planned to start "The Cousins' War" but that's a full series and I want to save it for winter now.)
