I think governments have always suppressed information and fed the public trivia, in one form or another, which is why Orwell and Huxley were able to write about it, because it was happening then as well. Both men would have seen the effects of propaganda from the two world wars and the public certainly were fed a lot of disinformation and trivia back then - certainly in the UK anyway. Nowadays, with the government media being so widespread and influential the problem is more noticeable.
However, I think it was visionary of Orwell, at least, to predict the media would have such a large influence (and control) over our lives.
I am very cynical about governments. I should believe more, perhaps but I can't.
Orwell was definitely right about the media's increasing influence. I just have to wonder what he would have thought of Twitter and other social media though.
