All sorts of news today; most of it deals with Irene, and there's nothing I can really add or say since I am so very far inland. As for all of my f-list and their families who are dealing with this, I am thinking about you and praying for you too. It would have seriously affected my cousin Donna(tm) and I think -- make that, *I know* -- a big part of me is still waiting for her to call and tell me about it. :(

It's times like these when I am almost glad that I live where I do. At least I know what to expect, and yes, I am all sorts of prepared. Though here I am more likely to be snowed in during the winter or something like that. So I have lots and lots of emergency supplies laid in (no, I do not consider it to be hoarding behavior either.)

On a lighter note, I finished my AinA fic, so now it is just a matter of waiting. Also, I have decided to take part in a big_bang, so... we shall see what happens with that. Right now I have two very separate but viable ideas, and I hope I can manage to pull at least one of them off.

And now it is time for walkies. My little dog simply will not quit whining until I do, lol!

Back in a few.

First: in national news, there was a big earthquake in VA today and yesterday there was one in CO. O_O Weird. One of my sibs (in PA) has already been through two quakes, all w/o being in CA -- which is kinda weird/funny, to be honest. So far, it seems that everyone is ok. I've tried to keep up with posts but it's kind of hard.

But at the same time, there is a hurricane heading for the East Coast too. :( My Cousin Donna(tm) was the one who always kept me informed of hurricanes and stuff. I miss her so much sometimes. ::wistful::

The weather *here* is/was stinky-hot, and I thought there might be a storm. But apparently not. And tomorrow will be back to cooler temps as well.

I spent most of the afternoon working on the AinA fic, which is very nearly finished. Just a little more beta and overall fine-tuning and it should be done. And I will have made the deadline too. Then it will be time for my next project, lol.

No other news for now. I am off to sleep for awhile. Back later on, maybe? Or at least tomorrow am,lol.

I am hoping that those of you on my flist, who live or have family/friends in the area(s) affected by the severe weather are all safe and well.

It seems that the Tuscaloosa tornado was more personal than I thought; it seems that my cousin Kristy has (had?) a house there. A tree fell on their house but luckily everyone made it into the basement safely. (Her daughter Amanda went to university there and lived there for six years, yet she can hardly recognize anything at all from the pictures.) More than that, I don't know -- but the news certainly looks grim. I will post more when I learn it.

This has all made me think of my cousin Donna(tm) even more than usual; she was always so frightened of tornadoes, and she was so thankful she lived in NC "because we never get that kind of weather here." And it looks like the severe weather is heading for NC even now.

Not much new for me; I worked on Christmas cards today. The cough remains so I will probably have to go to dr. again, and soon. So not looking forward to that, believe me.

The weather has been unusually nice here and I have been watching the nasty weather that is hitting the South and thinking about Donna. She hated cold winter weather; she claimed "the beach weather is always perfect." Heh. She would have hated this cold spell. I still miss her terribly though.

Time for a few more reviews and then bed.

Nice weather, yay! :)

I have been watching the news about (hurricane) Earl, and oddly enough, it makes me miss Donna even more. She would always call me and discuss each hurricane and I really miss her commentary on Earl since she lived in NC and spent most of her life on the Outer Banks. She spent her life along the Eastern Seaboard -- or at least every state south of VA. She had to evacuate twice, because of hurricanes Andrew and Hugo. As for Katrina -- well, maybe some other day I will talk about our discussions of Katrina. But not today.

Today will be spent running errands that should have been done yesterday, if the appointment hadn't canceled at the last minute.

Number 3: Halloween (1978).

Oddly enough, this is one of the very few movies I actually saw with My Cousin Donna(tm). Despite liking so many of the same movies (and books and music and just about *everything* really), we very seldom *went* to the movies together. No idea why really -- it was just one of those things, I guess. But we went, and we had a great time, and now it's one of my favorite memories.

Trailer under the cut.

Today feels like Sunday, big surprise. I finally motivated myself enough to go and visit Auntie and Uncle at the VA nursing home in GI (room 306, must remember that.) Neil and Mabel R. were there as well, so we all talked for awhile. Then they left and I stayed on for a bit. With all this talk of the 'flu, I'm not really sure when I might get up there again. Of course they wanted me to try and call their cell phone and of course since we were in the same room it rang through. Which I should have made up a fake number to dial so it wouldn't ring there; I might do that anyway, for next time. This way, I just look like a liar. *sigh* [Personally I think that the cell towers screwing up the signal but really, I have no idea. Or they are turning it off unknowingly -- either is possible.]

I left a little after 3pm, and drove back to Hastings, so I decided to see "Inglourious Basterds" -- it was really good and my back didn't hurt too bad from sitting so long either.

It has been a really hard weekend because Donna *always* called every holiday weekend, no matter what. I know she won't be calling anymore but damn I keep thinking of stuff I want to be sure and tell her, and yes my subconscious keeps expecting her call. :(

No other news for now.
la_samtyr: asian art drawing of sleeping cat (Default)
Funny, I am not really looking forward to this weekend. Donna always called over the holidays, and even if she was a little buzzed, I knew I could expect a call. *SIGH* Damn, but I miss her. Granted, we had our problems at times but underneath it all... just yeah. It seems so wrong that she is gone now, I keep thinking I will hear from her.

Tomorrow I need to take LeeAnn to the vet because she keeps shaking her head and her ear is tender to the touch -- it must be something inside the ear. :/

Yesterday I went to Hastings for a haircut and errands. The haircut was easy -- I have it pretty short already and it just started bulking out in the last week or so. So, get rid of the bulk, trim and I should be good until the fall. I got a few things at Menards, Radio Shack and the Evil Empire -- just "stuff", all of the little oods and ends that are always needed. I didn't get groceries though -- too much road work going on right in front of my usual store and in any case, I didn't really need anything special. So I got home, unloaded and wired a couple of bungee cords so the top freezer door doesn't keep popping open. It always seems to do it for some reason, and I can't justify an entirely new fridge just for that.

Then My Cousin Donna(tm) called last night and she yakked for way too long. She was doing ok though, and I was rather enjoying talking to her -- right up until she started saying how she was thinking of joining Scientology because "people like John Travolta and Tom Cruise are Scientologists, so it must be cool." >>.<< No, just... no. But that is a rant for another day.

Today it was nice and cool because the humidity wasn't quite so bad, so I did laundry and picked up a little bit. I need to get someone else to do some more mowing etc. so that I can get rid of these big freakin' weeds that have sprung up all over the yard. Yuck. Plus I picked two ticks off of my arms already and now I think I feel more of them crawling all over my skin. Ewwww, just Ewwwww! I hate ticks w/a passion!!

About Today

la_samtyr: asian art drawing of sleeping cat (Default)
I am slowly feeling better. Today I did very little but I did manage to write some when I wasn't looking things up. I must look pretty rough though because when Shockey stopped by, asked if I wanted to go to the ER. I told him I'd already been but he didn't stay long. No surprise there -- most guys don't deal well with sickness, especially when said sick person is female. But he did say he would stop back in a few days to make sure I was ok.

I called My Cousin Donna(tm) and then talked to Auntie. But more on that under the cut.

Last night I got a call from My Cousin Donna's boyfriend Daniel, with the news that she was still in hospital. Big surprise to me! Now I will admit that she called me about a week and a half ago, saying that she hurt her knee(?) leg(?) *really* bad. She said that she had fallen off of her sister's porch while she (Donna) was drunk and that she had fallen about 18 ft.(!) but the hospital sent her home. Since she has a flair for drama and she called me from her home and not the hospital, I figured she was exaggerating and had probably fallen 2-4 ft. max, and that it was going to be an out-patient thing, or maybe just overnight or so. But no. Apparently they had to reconstruct her knee and do a lot of work on her leg -- now she looks forward to PT and OT and maybe getting a disability check. *sigh* Ok, so I was wrong. Otoh, she is enjoying the "super-fine pain meds" she's had while in hospital... Just.. yeah. >.<

Well, by now everyone knows about the stupidity of amazon. *sigh* It really pisses me off because it's one of the few places I can buy stuff online since I do not have plastic or Payepal and had to use prepaid plastic. I used to get things from eBay since I could use money orders but it *seems* that every seller there has either gone with plastic or Payepal, and I cannot get the prepaid plastic to work there. And since over 98% of what I bought was either a book or dvd/cd, well... you see where this is going. I try to buy as much as I can locally but when you're looking for things that are either out of print or not carried by local stores, it's hard.

I have to admit, part of me is very tempted to go and buy a new prepaid card tomorrow and then max it out on the same books and dvds that Amazon is "protecting" me from. As my old economics prof used to say, "Nothing is more effective than your dollar vote." So while part of me thinks a boycott is effective, wouldn't a massive buying spree on the things that are no longer "sales ranked" be just as good, especially since people are cutting back on their splurge items?

In any case, it's somewhat moot for me since I don't have the money to spend anyway. Right now just keeping bills paid and caught up are more than enough to deal with. I am going to write them a letter though -- you know, a real paper letter to send by snail mail. Remember the mailbags in the courtroom scene from "Miracle on 34th Street?" Yup! I doubt if my letter will ever be read; it will probably go straight to the shredder for recycling, but at least they will actually be aware of its physical presence, if only for a second. Of course, lots of emails (*polite* emails, please -- let's not give them anything to complain about) and of course, the old 800 numbers, etc. Maybe a server crash or two, combined with flooded phone lines will make the point.

Also, a link to click, courtesy of one of my sibs (and most of the following words are hers too, I just borrowed 'em since it's essentially what I would write anyway):

Smart Bitches also set up a Google Bomb to redefine "Amazon Rank":

http://www.smartbitchestrashybooks.com/amazonrank/

If you post about this issue, and I encourage you to do so, please include a link to that definition page. It's already the first entry shown whenever someone Googles "Amazon rank," but more is always better and will make it harder for Amazon or any publicity-doctor firm they hire to bury it.

Clickity-clickity, everybody. Let's see how many hits we can score. [vbeg]

Now, on to family stuff under the cut...

Well, there is not a lot. First, this is late because I stayed up late (2am) chatting on IM, then I worked on one of my three prezzie fics. By the time I realised that I really should try and sleep, it was about 3:30am, so I slept till about 10:30am. This is not a sensible schedule but oh well.

I have also been avoiding calls from My Cousin Donna(tm) because I am still in no mood to talk to her but if I don't answer soon, she'll start freaking out. I just need to think of a really good lie. ::thinks:: I am supposed to be a writer; surely I can think of something plausible.

No other news for now.
la_samtyr: asian art drawing of sleeping cat (Default)
I did not get to see "Doubt" as planned due to cold weather and because it was not held over. Sadly, it was sharing a screen with "Bride Wars" >.< and "Paul Blart: Mall Cop" was held over as well. >>.<< I understand that decisions regarding bookings are probably made far in advance, but still. I mean, *damn*, people. Otoh, "Defiance" is now playing and I am considering seeing that. I would prefer to wait for "Slumdog Millionaire" though but it's hard to tell if it will come here. There's a chance because movies that get Nominated often do show up. So, we shall see.

The weather has gotten a little bit nicer and tomorrow I might as well go into Hastings. Not sure if I'll go to a movie or not though. Maybe. It all depends.

Family rant below. Sorry. In the meantime, off to bed.

Hmmmm, so what is new? Well, it's windy but not as cold as it was -- but it is windy. Yuck.

My Cousin Donna(tm) called last night and yakked for awhile. Seems that her mom is *finally* in a nursing home and (her mom) is depressed now. ::eyeroll:: Y'know, I'm sorry for her but I really do not give a damn. If that makes me seem like a cold bitch, then I'm sorry. But I have spent a lifetime tied down with caregiving and when Donna decides to whine about things, I just get tired. To say nothing of her using up my phone minutes! Grrrrr! See, if she would only get a computer, it wouldn't matter. [I spend extra on my computer because I deal primarily w/ email and other things -- we all know what that might be right? Right. ;)] And to make things even better, she is telling me how she has started studying Scientology because "so many cool Hollywood people believe it, it must be true." >>.<< Brain hurts....

So today I am debating what to do because I'd like to see a movie but I won't (tempting as it is), mostly because I am hoping that 'Slumdog Millionaire' might turn up locally and I want to be ready if it does. I also need to get some groceries and other good stuff and I should do it today. The cats have scarfed down every last bit of dry food, and it is far easier (and cheaper!!) to get a couple of big bags in Hastings. Otoh, when I am in the house, then I am not spending money -- which is a good thing, right?

I actually did some writing last night. Not much but some, and that always makes me feel a little better. I might even do a little more and get something finished. We shall see.

Sent an e-card to Char because it is her b'day tomorrow.

Back later on.

Ah, Monday!

It's icky out -- cloudy, cool and rainy.

Things just keep going from weird to strange to *ugh*!

Now it seems that my uncle needed to go the ER yesterday because his blood sugar (he is a diabetic who needs to take shots) went from 250 to 50 -- I think I got that right -- and they called 911. They kept him for a few hours and sent him back home. So today they were going to "see" the doctor and make arrangements to go into a nursing home. *SIGH* I was afraid of this. They waited too long and now they are only going to be unhappy because the choice is now no choice, it is *required*. Oh well... nothing to do about it. They have been talking about this for the last four years, ever since my mom passed on but they never would make that first move... :/

Also, My Cousin Donna(tm) called last night and was yakking on about her mom, her mom's bad health and the troubles her mom has had/is having in a nursing home in NC. At least I think that's what she said -- damn cellphones kept cutting out. I cut her short because (1) I didn't want to hear it and (2) I need to save as much time on my phone as is possible.

I hate to think what the rest of the week is going to hold.
