The National Book Foundation and Penguin Random House are encouraging you to make #TimeToRead tomorrow between Noon and 4 p.m. (in your respective time zone). 40% of American adults are at or below basic reading proficiency and 14% are illiterate. Additionally, 53% of 9-year-olds read daily—with that number dropping to only 19% by the time they turn 17.

National Readathon Day is meant to save the bookworms and inspire reading for pleasure. If you choose to donate through FirstGiving, proceeds will support education programs like BookUp—an afterschool reading program that has donated over 25,000 books to middle schoolers.

What will you be doing tomorrow between Noon and 4? We certainly hope you’ll be reading like us! Post what you’ll be reading in the comments and send us your photos! Remember to tag them with #TimetoRead. Happy Reading!

This Thanksgiving was probably the quietest one I have spent in years.: I basically stayed home and vegged out. My cousin Carol from Chicago called, and we had a nice long visit. The Thanksgiving Day weather was fair-ish but Friday and Saturday were utterly gorgeous.

Or it was until today...

The weather was a lot nicer than it has been for over a week so I went to Hastings to run some overdue errands.

First of all, I went and got my new glasses. I have to admit I really like them -- especially the frames; I think they are the best fit in *cough* many years *cough*. Of course I am still getting used to them and they might need some adjusting but if today is any indication, there should be little problem.

Well, it's not quite right -- I *collect*, I don't hoard. Big difference. :)

Ok, so technically it's not a *birthday* but on this day in 1937, "The Hobbit" was published.

The weather was utterly gorgeous out; it was about 40F -- sunny and warm. :) Of course, the weather will be kind of iffy over the weekend but next week is supposed to be nice as well. Fingers crossed! After doing Serious Stuff, I indulged in a lunch at one of the local Chinese places in Hastings.

From there, I decided to go and visit Auntie and Uncle in GI, since I haven't seen them since before last Christmas and I do mean that literally. Auntie was happy to see me and so we chatted for about an hour. They seem happy enough and are doing ok, which is all that can be said for people who are in their mid-90's.

Then I went to one of the book stores there and *finally* picked up a copy of "Kushiel's Dart." I only had enough put aside for that one but they have all of the others in the series in stock, so I will probably pick them up later on. They also had some manga titles but I didn't find any copies of "Monster" or "Descendants of Darkness", and "Ai No Kusabi" needs to be special ordered.

Stupidly, I managed to lose the case for my cell phone. I haven't been any place so I haven't been carrying it and the place where I keep (kept) it is very close to where my wastebasket is -- and I'm pretty sure it fell in there when I didn't notice. Last Wednesday was pick-up day (the last pick-up of the month), and I usually only put my dumpsters out once a month... and yeah, it probably went. There is a very slim chance I might find it but I am not very optimistic. So, I bought another case -- but I honestly don't like it was well as the first one.

And last but hardly least -- Serious Stuff (aka the legal mess) might be coming to an end -- I hope!!!

Ok, you really need to check out "The Daily Show" and catch Jon Stewart interviewing "The Dangerous World of Butterflies: The Startling Subculture of Criminals, Collectors, and Conservationists" by Peter Laufer. It's a rerun, but utterly fascinating. Seriously. You know there is no way this can be made up.

And yes, I have this on my wish list.

Since so many of you on my list are also book lovers, I thought I would mention a comm I have recently joined: [community profile] book_memes . You might be interested in checking it out -- it's just what it says it is, and they are having an icon contest now. Enjoy!

A couple of days ago I posted a meme to ask me anything, try and jog me out of my comfort zone. So, I have decided to make a separate post for the answers. And since everyone knows how much I like to ramble, to save your pages (and sanity), everything is under the cut.

Fifteen books you've read that will always stick with you. First fifteen you can recall in no more than 15 minutes...

1) Silent Spring -- Rachel Carson
2) Born Free -- Joy Adams
3) Smoky the Cowhorse -- Will James
4) To Kill A Mockingbird -- Harper Lee
5) Candy -- Luke Davies
6) The Outsiders -- S.E. Hinton
7) Frankenstein -- Mary Shelley
8) The Flight of the Horse -- Larry Niven
9) Les Misérables -- Victor Hugo
10) The Cowboy and the Cossack -- Clair Huffaker
11) Dracula -- Bram Stoker
12) The Color Purple -- Alice Walker
13) Roots -- Alex Haley
14) The Count of Monte Cristo -- Alexandre Dumas (père)
15) Captain Blood -- Rafael Sabatini

This was easy and hard. Easy (because I could think of so many) and hard (because of what I had to leave off.) My first instinct was to list all of JRR Tolkien's books but that would have cut far too many out -- and if we're friends, you should know that already. So these are the ones that would make the list right after Professor Tolkien.

Yoinked from [profile] caruso:

Rules:
*Grab the book nearest you. Right now.
*Turn to page 56.
*Find the fifth sentence.
*Post that sentence along with these instructions in your LiveJournal.
*Don't dig for your favorite book, the coolest, the most intellectual. Use the CLOSEST.
